Double Tower

The Double Tower is a historic fortified structure located in Waterford, Ireland, built in the late 15th to early 16th century. It is one of the six surviving towers from the original 17 that formed the city's defenses. Positioned on Castle Street, it features two chambers, one leading to the Benedictine Priory of St. John, which was funded by local citizens and the English priory of St. Peter and Paul. The tower stands 10.5 meters tall and is notable for its oblong shape and historical significance, having endured cannon fire during the Cromwellian siege of 1649. Visitors can explore the well-preserved towers and sections of the ancient city wall that connect them, offering a glimpse into Waterford's medieval past.
