E. A. Durgin House

The E. A. Durgin House, located at 113 Summer Street in Stoneham, Massachusetts, is a remarkable example of Second Empire architecture, built around 1870 for local shoe dealer E. A. Durgin. This two-story wood-frame house features a striking square tower with a steeply pitched gable roof, adorned with scalloped wood shingles and a distinctive small window. The mansard roof, originally slate, has been updated to asphalt shingling, while the cornice showcases elegant dentil molding and paired brackets. Recognized for its historical significance, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, making it a noteworthy site for both tourists and researchers interested in 19th-century architecture.
