Stonewall Inn riots

On June 28, 1969 a police raid on the Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street triggered multi-night demonstrations and clashes between patrons, neighborhood residents, and law enforcement. The uprisings that followed are widely cited as a seminal moment that galvanized the modern LGBTQ rights movement in the United States. The Stonewall site is now designated as a landmark and hosts a memorial and museum related to LGBTQ history.
