Telesterion

The Telesterion, an ancient sanctuary in Eleusis, Greece, served as the central hall for the Eleusinian Mysteries, one of the most sacred religious rites in ancient Greece. Built in the 7th century BCE, it could accommodate up to 3,000 people and was dedicated to the goddesses Demeter and Persephone. The hall witnessed numerous significant events, including secretive initiation ceremonies that symbolized life after death, rooted in the myth of Persephone's abduction by Hades. Over the centuries, the Telesterion underwent several reconstructions, notably by the architect Iktinos, and remained in use until its destruction in 396 CE. The annual festival of Eleusinia attracted visitors from all over, making Eleusis a bustling center of worship and cultural exchange during its peak.
