Lewis Hayden House - Underground Railroad and abolitionist hub

The Lewis and Harriet Hayden House at 66 Phillips Street was the home of Lewis Hayden, a prominent Black abolitionist and former enslaved person who aided fugitive enslaved people in Boston. The house served as a center for abolitionist organizing and is documented as part of Beacon Hill’s Black community activism in the mid-19th century. It is preserved and interpreted by the Museum of African American History and appears on the Black Heritage Trail as a site associated with Underground Railroad activity and local abolitionist lore.
