InterContinental Mark Hopkins and Mark Hopkins Jr.

The InterContinental Mark Hopkins hotel stands on the site of the Mark Hopkins mansion built by railroad magnate Mark Hopkins Jr., one of the Central Pacific Railroad's "Big Four." The original Hopkins mansion was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire, and the hotel opened on the site in 1926. The hotel's existence and name commemorate Hopkins's role in 19th-century California railroad development.
