Attempted assassination of President Andrew Jackson at the U.S. Capitol

On January 30, 1835, Richard Lawrence attempted to assassinate President Andrew Jackson as Jackson was leaving a funeral at the U.S. Capitol; both of Lawrence's pistols misfired. Jackson reportedly attacked his assailant with a cane after the attempt and helped subdue him until authorities arrived. Lawrence was later judged not guilty by reason of insanity, making this the first recorded attempt on a sitting U.S. president.
