Rothe House

Rothe House is a remarkable late 16th-century merchant's townhouse complex in Kilkenny, Ireland, built by John Rothe Fitz-Piers. This unique structure, consisting of three houses and beautiful gardens, is the only surviving example of a complete burgage plot in Ireland, showcasing original post-medieval features. The complex serves as a museum, housing a collection of artefacts related to Kilkenny's rich history. Visitors can explore the reconstructed 17th-century garden, which includes a well dug by Cistercian monks. Rothe House is not only significant for its architecture, reflecting the English Renaissance style, but also for its historical connections to the influential Rothe family and the political landscape of Kilkenny during the 15th to 17th centuries.
