Croton Distributing Reservoir (removed late 19th century)

The Croton Distributing Reservoir, completed in the 1840s, once occupied the block now home to the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library at Bryant Park. The above-ground reservoir was taken out of service and the site cleared at the turn of the 20th century to allow construction of the library, which opened in 1911. Its removal ended the visible presence of the mid-19th-century municipal water infrastructure on that site.
