Washington Square Arch

The Washington Square Arch in Greenwich Village was first erected as a temporary wooden arch for a 1889 celebration of George Washington and was replaced by a permanent marble arch in the early 1890s. Modeled after the Arc de Triomphe, the arch has been a focal point for public gatherings, parades, and artistic expression in Washington Square Park. Sculptural reliefs and allegorical figures were added in subsequent years, contributing to its role as a civic and cultural landmark.
