Mettray Penal Colony

The Mettray Penal Colony, located in the village of Mettray near Tours, France, operated from 1840 to 1937 as a pioneering reformatory for young male delinquents aged 6 to 21. Founded by penal reformer Frédéric-Auguste Demetz and architect Guillaume-Abel Blouet, it was designed to resemble a family structure, promoting rehabilitation through manual labor and education. The Colony featured a unique layout with pavilions for living and working, gardens, and even a replica sailing ship for training. Initially celebrated for its progressive approach, it later faced criticism for harsh discipline and financial issues, leading to its closure after serving over 17,000 boys.
