City Hall Station, the ornate 'ghost station'

City Hall Station, beneath City Hall Park, opened with the IRT in 1904 and was closed to regular passenger service in 1945 because its tight curvature could not accommodate longer modern trains. The station retains extensive Guastavino tile work, skylights, and original brass fixtures and is occasionally opened for guided tours by the New York City Transit Museum and the MTA. Urban legends describe the station as haunted, but those stories are anecdotal and not substantiated by documented evidence.
