New York Marble Cemetery

Established in 1830, the New York Marble Cemetery is one of Manhattan's earliest non-sectarian burial grounds and one of two surviving 19th-century marble-lined underground cemeteries in the borough. The site consists of family burial vaults lined with quarried marble, a burial practice adopted in part because of public health concerns about surface interments. The cemetery is located on Cherry Street in the Lower East Side and is open to the public for limited tours and events.
