Vesuvio Cafe (Beat-era bar)

Vesuvio Cafe, founded in 1948 by Henri Lenoir, is a historic North Beach bar long associated with Beat Generation writers and artists and located across from City Lights Bookstore. The interior retains period furnishings and artwork connected to mid-20th-century literary culture and it hosted readings and gatherings by figures such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. The cafe remains a commercial bar and cultural landmark referenced in accounts of San Francisco's postwar literary scene.
