Library of Congress - the world’s largest library

The Library of Congress, established in 1800, serves as the research library for the United States Congress and is housed in multiple buildings on Capitol Hill. It is the largest library in the world by number of items and shelf space, holding more than 170 million items including books, recordings, photographs, maps, and manuscripts. The Jefferson Building is the principal historic public face of the institution and contains major exhibition and reading room spaces.
