Fort Independence on Castle Island

Fort Independence is a pentagonal stone fort on Castle Island with a current structure built between 1833 and 1851 on the site of earlier colonial-era fortifications. The fort overlooks Boston Harbor and is managed as a historic site with seasonal public access and interpretive signage about its military history. Castle Island Park surrounding the fort is a popular recreational area with walking paths, picnic areas, and views of the harbor. The site is a long-standing element of Boston's maritime and military heritage.
