Gas Works Park: industrial site transformed into park

Gas Works Park occupies the site of the former Seattle Gas Light Company coal gasification plant on the north shore of Lake Union and preserves many of the plant's industrial structures as landscape features. Designed by landscape architect Richard Haag and opened as a public park in 1975, it is an example of adaptive reuse of contaminated industrial land and presents an unusual mix of industrial machinery and park topography. The site's history and remaining structures make the park a distinctive geographic and visual anomaly along Lake Union's shoreline.
