Japonica Hall

Japonica Hall, also known as the Major J.J. Lucas House, is a historic home in Society Hill, South Carolina, built between 1896 and 1897. This striking 2+1⁄2-story brick residence showcases Beaux Arts architecture with an Italian Renaissance-inspired facade. It features a prominent hipped-roof entrance bay and a charming Tuscan verandah. The house was the residence of Major James Jonathan Lucas, a significant figure in local railroad development and a Confederate artillery officer during the Civil War. Recognized for its historical significance, Japonica Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and is part of the Welsh Neck-Long Bluff-Society Hill Historic District, making it an intriguing destination for tourists and researchers alike.
