Taiping Prison

Taiping Prison, established in 1879, is the oldest modern prison in Malaysia, located in Taiping, Perak. Originally known as Larut Prison, it has a rich history that includes the introduction of Sikh warders from India and vocational training from Hong Kong in the early 1880s. The prison served as a detention center for long-term prisoners from several states and developed various industries, including printing and sewing. During the Japanese occupation from 1941 to 1945, it functioned as both a public prison and a POW detention center, with all records from that period lost after the war. Today, it stands as a significant historical site reflecting Malaysia's penal history.
