San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden - created in a former quarry

The San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden was developed in an abandoned limestone quarry and features winding stone paths, a pagoda, and koi ponds that contrast with the surrounding urban area. The garden's stonework was expanded during New Deal-era projects, and the site was renamed the Chinese Tea Garden during World War II before the Japanese Tea Garden name was later restored. Its location inside Brackenridge Park, set below street level and surrounded by dense landscaping, gives the garden a tucked-away, hard-to-find feel for first-time visitors. The site is managed as a city park and draws attention for its quarry-origin landscape design.
