Burleigh (Ellicott City, Maryland)

Burleigh, also known as Burleigh Manor, is a historic Federal-style home in Ellicott City, Maryland, built between 1797 and 1810 on a sprawling 2,300-acre estate. Originally a modest one-story frame building, it features significant outbuildings including a 1720 smokehouse and a 1941 swimming pool. The manor was constructed by Colonel Rezin Hammond, a notable figure in the colonial revolution, and has a rich history involving the Hammond family and their interactions with enslaved individuals. After changing hands several times, it is now managed as a small animal sanctuary and eco-retreat. The estate is also home to Burleigh Manor Middle School, recognized as one of the top schools in Maryland.
