Copp's Hill: surviving hill of the Shawmut Peninsula

Copp's Hill Burying Ground occupies Copp's Hill, one of the original high points of the Shawmut Peninsula that formed early Boston; it remains while other historic hills were reduced or quarried away. Material from lowered hills in Boston was documented to have been used as fill in 19th-century reclamation projects such as the creation of parts of the Back Bay. Copp's Hill's preserved elevation provides a direct, visible remnant of the peninsula's original topography within the modern city.
