Gallaudet University (Shaw/Trinidad)

Chartered by Congress in 1864, Gallaudet University in Northeast Washington is the federally recognized university for the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The university campus is bilingual in American Sign Language and English and was the site of the 1988 Deaf President Now protest that resulted in the appointment of Gallaudet's first deaf president. Gallaudet remains a cultural and educational center for Deaf culture and accessibility advocacy in the city.
