Lincoln Memorial - 36 Columns and Seated Statue

The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in 1922 and contains a 19-foot seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln carved by Daniel Chester French. The memorial's colonnade has 36 Doric columns, each representing a state in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death in 1865. The building's interior walls bear inscriptions of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address. The memorial was designed by architect Henry Bacon.
