Fort Caroline archaeological site

Fort Caroline National Memorial commemorates the 1564 French Huguenot settlement along the St. Johns River and preserves an area where archaeological investigations have identified buried features. Archaeologists have recorded posthole patterns, palisade traces, and artifact concentrations interpreted as remnants of the original 16th-century fort and occupation. The memorial interprets both the archaeological evidence and the documented historical accounts of the French settlement and its destruction. The site is managed by the National Park Service and supports ongoing study of early colonial contact in northeastern Florida.
