People's Temple headquarters (Jim Jones) in San Francisco

The Peoples Temple, led by Jim Jones, maintained a San Francisco headquarters at 1859 Geary Street while building political influence in the city during the 1970s. Members of the Temple later died in the 1978 Jonestown mass murder–suicide in Guyana; more than 900 people died in Jonestown, though those deaths occurred in Guyana rather than San Francisco. The Geary Street address served as a local center for Temple activities and recruitment prior to the Guyana tragedy.
