Phoenix Mercury founding and championships

The Phoenix Mercury were founded in 1997 as one of the WNBA's early expansion franchises and have played their home games in downtown Phoenix at the arena now called Footprint Center (formerly US Airways Center/America West Arena). The Mercury have won three WNBA championships, in 2007, 2009, and 2014. The franchise has been a long-standing professional women's basketball presence in Phoenix since its inception.
