Lai Chun Yuen Opera House

The Lai Chun Yuen Opera House, established before 1887 in Singapore's Chinatown, was a prominent Cantonese opera venue known for its traditional architecture and cultural significance. Designed by Alfred John Bidwell, it could accommodate 834 spectators and hosted famous performers, making it a key entertainment hub for immigrants. Despite its popularity, the opera house was situated in a red-light district, reflecting the complex social dynamics of the time. The rise of cinema in the late 1920s led to its decline, and after being repurposed several times, it was transformed into the Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen.
