Maqam Shamoun Al Safa

The Maqam Shamoun Al Safa is a significant Shi'ite Islamic shrine located in Shamaa village, South Lebanon, believed to house the mausoleum of Saint Peter, known as Sham'un as-Safa in Islamic tradition. Established or renovated by the Fatimids in 1097, the shrine has a rich history, with archaeological evidence suggesting some materials date back to the 1st century CE. It has been a pilgrimage site for Shiite Muslims, especially after its restoration post-2006 Lebanon War. However, the shrine suffered extensive damage during the 2024 Israeli invasion, raising concerns about its preservation and historical significance.
