Madison Waterworks

Madison Waterworks, also known as Nichols Station, is a historic site located in Madison, Wisconsin, built in 1917 as part of a major upgrade to the city's water system. This architectural gem, designed by Balch & Lippert in a functional Prairie School style, features unique elements such as mock turrets and gables. Originally housing two Allis-Chalmers steam pumping engines, one of which is a rare surviving example, the building played a crucial role in transitioning the city's water supply from artesian wells to Lake Mendota. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, making it a noteworthy destination for tourists and researchers interested in engineering history and architectural design.
