Benedum–Trees Building

The Benedum–Trees Building, located at 223 Fourth Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a historic skyscraper built in 1905. Commissioned by Caroline Jones Machesney, it holds the distinction of being the first skyscraper in the city designed and built for a woman. Originally named the Machesney Building, it was sold in 1913 to oil magnates Joe Trees and Michael Late Benedum, who occupied the fifteenth floor for forty years. Designed by architect Thomas H. Scott, the 19-story building was recognized as a historic landmark in 1973, reflecting its significance in Pittsburgh's architectural and economic history.
