St. Luke's School and Recreation Center

St. Luke's School and Recreation Center, located in St. Lucas, Iowa, is a historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2005. Established alongside St. Luke's Catholic Church in 1855 by German immigrants, the school has a rich history marked by the influence of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration starting in 1876. The current Georgian Revival building, completed in 1911, features large classrooms and a distinctive architectural style. A recreation center was added in 1950, providing a gymnasium and community meeting space. The school experienced peak enrollment in the 1960s but closed in 1997, merging with other local schools. Today, the building serves as the German-American Museum and Heritage Center, making it an intriguing destination for tourists and researchers interested in local history and culture.
