Temperance Temple (Chicago)

The Temperance Temple, also known as the Women's Temple, was an iconic office building in Chicago that served as the headquarters for the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Constructed between 1890 and 1892, it was a hub for the temperance movement, which sought to promote abstinence from alcohol. The building was designed by renowned architect John Wellborn Root and was notable for its significant role in the women's rights movement, housing various organizations and hosting numerous events. Despite its initial success, the Temple faced financial challenges and was ultimately demolished in 1926. Today, it stands as a historical landmark reflecting the efforts of women in social reform during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
