Shuart-Van Orden Stone House

The Shuart-Van Orden Stone House, built in 1740 and located in Plattekill, New York, is a notable example of Hudson Valley Dutch Colonial architecture. This historic house, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, features a unique blend of brick construction and a gambrel roof, influenced by early migrants from New Jersey and New York City. The property includes a beautifully restored 1+1⁄2-story house with original red paint and wainscoting, alongside several early 19th-century buildings, including an 18th-century Dutch barn. The house has a rich history, having been owned by early settler Johannis Shuart and later by Peter Van Orden, who operated a store and distillery on the premises. Today, visitors can appreciate the extensive renovations that have preserved its historical charm while revealing hidden architectural features.
