UNESCO inscription of the San Antonio Missions recognizing indigenous roles

The San Antonio Missions were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 as a cultural landscape of 18th-century Spanish frontier missions; the nomination and inscription acknowledge the missions as institutions that included indigenous populations (neophytes) and shaped local landscapes through indigenous labor and settlement. The World Heritage documentation discusses the missions' cultural significance, including interactions between Franciscan missionaries and native communities. The inscribed property includes Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission San Juan, Mission Espada, and the Alamo, each interpreted for their colonial and indigenous histories. The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park administers interpretation and preservation of these sites.
