United States Post Office – Port Townsend Main

The United States Post Office – Port Townsend Main is a historic Richardsonian Romanesque building completed in 1893, perched on a bluff overlooking Port Townsend's waterfront. Originally envisioned as a Federal building to support the city's aspirations as a major trade center, it was celebrated for its architectural significance in the Northwest. Designed by architects Mifflin E. Bell and Willoughby J. Edbrooke, the post office reflects the ambitious spirit of Port Townsend during a time when it sought to rival Tacoma and Seattle for prominence in Puget Sound trade. Despite its grandeur, the city's hopes were dashed when financial setbacks hindered the development of necessary infrastructure.
