New York Marble Cemetery

Established in 1830, the New York Marble Cemetery on the Lower East Side is one of Manhattan's earliest non-sectarian burial grounds and is notable for its underground family marble vaults rather than surface gravestones. It was created during a period of public health concern and limited burial space and contains vaults for several early New York families. The site is preserved as a historic burial ground and is open to the public on a limited basis for tours and events.
