Embassy of Germany, Saint Petersburg

The former Embassy of Germany in Saint Petersburg is a notable example of Stripped Classicism, designed by architect Peter Behrens and completed in 1913. Originally built to house the German diplomatic mission, the building has a rich history, including its use as a consulate for the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany. Located at 11/41 Saint Isaac's Square, it features a striking facade adorned with 14 columns and was criticized by local artists for its Teutonic style. The building has survived tumultuous events, including anti-German riots during World War I, and has served various functions over the years, including housing a hospital during the Siege of Leningrad. Currently, it is home to Russian government agencies, and restoration efforts are underway to recreate its original sculptures, reflecting a complex history of cultural exchange between Germany and Russia.
