Lazzaretto of Manoel Island

The Lazzaretto, located on Manoel Island in Gżira, Malta, is a historic quarantine station and hospital dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Originally established in the 16th century to combat epidemics, it has served various purposes, including a military hospital during the Crimean War and a refuge for refugees in 1922. The complex features notable architecture, including the Palazzo Vecchio and the New Palace, and is surrounded by a high wall with remnants of cemeteries. Although currently in a state of neglect, plans for restoration aim to transform it into a vibrant space with residences, offices, and a boutique hotel, preserving its historical significance as a Grade 2 national monument.
