New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum - remnant mercury mine

New Almaden, within Almaden Quicksilver County Park, preserves the site of California's first and most productive mercury (quicksilver) mining district; commercial mining began in the 1840s and continued into the 20th century. The New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum and remaining mine structures display mining equipment, town-era buildings, and interpretive exhibits about mercury production and its role in California history. The area includes preserved worker housing sites and cemeteries associated with the mining community.
