Gay Liberation Monument (George Segal)

Installed in Christopher Park in 1992, George Segal’s Gay Liberation Monument comprises four life-size bronze figures seated on benches and commemorates the gay rights movement associated with the nearby Stonewall uprising. The work was commissioned by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the Gay Liberation Committee and has been a site-specific public sculpture in the park since its dedication. The sculpture is accessible to the public and is often referenced in discussions of memorializing LGBTQ+ history in New York City.
