Gum Wall in Post Alley

The Gum Wall is a brick wall in Post Alley under Pike Place Market that became covered in used chewing gum beginning in the 1990s and gained notoriety as a local curiosity. Located adjacent to the Market Theater, the wall was pressure-washed clean in 2015 and subsequently re-accumulated gum from visitors. It is frequently photographed and cited in guides to Pike Place Market as an example of spontaneous street-based culture. The Gum Wall is a crowd-made installation rather than an officially commissioned public artwork.
