Fisk University and the Fisk Jubilee Singers

Fisk University in Nashville is the home of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, an a cappella ensemble formed in 1871 to raise funds for the school by performing African American spirituals. Jubilee Hall, built on the Fisk campus in the 19th century, is one of the nation's earliest surviving academic buildings for African Americans and is associated with the singers' legacy. The Jubilee Singers toured the United States and Europe in the 1870s and are credited with introducing spirituals to international audiences. Fisk continues to preserve and present this musical heritage through performances and campus events.
