Congress Avenue Bridge bat colony

The Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge is home to a colony of Mexican free-tailed bats that emerges each evening from spring through fall. Biologists estimate the colony numbers in the hundreds of thousands, making it one of the largest urban bat colonies in North America. The nightly emergence has been the subject of scientific study and is a regular local phenomenon observed from the bridge and adjacent viewing areas.
