President's House archaeological excavations near Independence Hall

National Park Service archaeological investigations at the President's House site adjacent to Independence Hall uncovered foundations, wells, privies, and artifacts dating to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Those excavations produced material evidence used in interpreting the presence of enslaved Africans who lived and worked at the house during the administrations of George Washington and John Adams. The archaeological findings supported the development of on-site interpretation addressing slavery and urban life in Revolutionary-era Philadelphia.
