Missouri Lumber and Mining Company

The Missouri Lumber and Mining Company (MLM), established in the 1880s, was a significant timber corporation in southeast Missouri, primarily operating in the town of Grandin. Founded by Pennsylvania lumbermen, MLM capitalized on the abundant timber resources of the Missouri Ozarks to support the U.S. westward expansion. At its peak, Grandin became a bustling company town with a population of 2,500 to 3,000 and housed the largest lumber mill in the country. The company built a complex of mills and kilns, transforming the area into a hub of lumber production. However, as timber resources dwindled, MLM abandoned Grandin around 1910, although it continued operations in other regions for a decade. Today, many of Grandin's historic buildings are preserved and recognized for their technological and economic significance, making it an intriguing site for tourists and researchers interested in industrial history and the development of the American Midwest.
