Aluminum capstone of the Washington Monument

The Washington Monument's apex contains a small aluminum pyramid that was installed in 1884 as the monument's capstone. At the time aluminum was rare and costly; the capstone was notable for being one of the largest single cast pieces of aluminum then produced and was gilded for appearance. The aluminum pyramid sits atop the 555-foot obelisk and is documented in National Park Service and construction records.
