The Gum Wall in Post Alley

Located beneath Pike Place Market, the Gum Wall is a brick alley covered in thousands of pieces of chewed gum applied by visitors and passersby. The practice began in the mid-1990s, reportedly by patrons waiting in line for shows at the adjacent Market Theater. It became a noted piece of unofficial communal street art and a tourist attraction before a thorough cleaning was performed in November 2015. The site remains a recognized example of participatory urban street art in Seattle.
