Fort Point National Historic Site (Civil War–era masonry fort)

Fort Point was constructed between 1853 and 1861 to protect San Francisco Bay and is one of the finest surviving examples of mid-19th-century masonry seacoast fortifications in the United States. The fort sits directly beneath the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge and was spared demolition during bridge construction after engineers determined it did not compromise the bridge's foundations. Fort Point is administered by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
