Jacoby Building

The Jacoby Building, also known as Jacoby's Storehouse, is a significant historical landmark located in Arcata, California. Constructed in 1857 in the Classical revival style, it is the only original historical building remaining in the area. Initially built for pioneer Augustus Jacoby, the structure survived a devastating fire in 1875 and has undergone several renovations, including a major rebuild in 1907. The building has served various purposes over the years, including as a general store and hotel, and has historical ties to the conflicts with the Native American Wiyot tribe. It was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1963 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The site has been the center of controversy due to its historical associations and the removal of a nearby statue and plaque that sparked discussions about its legacy.
